Airports are now considering replacing the natural grass between the airport runways with artificial grass. Small habitats of animals and bird live and feed on these patches of grass creating runway hazards for airplanes landing and taking off. By installing artificial grass, these habitats are eliminated in a humane way. The critters are not harmed, or sucked into airplane engines; they simply have to find someplace else to live.
After the incidence over the Hudson River last year where the geese got sucked into the engines, airports are looking for alternatives to natural grass on runways. It also decreases maintenance expenses for airports. The artificial grass does not need to be mowed, watered and who knew that many airports actually employ wildlife biologists ($$$) to keeps the critters under control. The FAA has conducted several experiments to test whether the artificial grass is a viable option and the turf passed with flying colors.
