Artificial Grass and Airport Critters

Airports are now considering replacing the natural grass between the airport runways with artificial grass. Small habitats of animals and bird live and feed on these patches of grass creating runway hazards for airplanes landing and taking off. By installing artificial grass, these habitats are eliminated in a humane way. The critters are not harmed, or sucked into airplane engines; they simply have to find someplace else to live.
After the incidence over the Hudson River last year where the geese got sucked into the engines, airports are looking for alternatives to natural grass on runways. It also decreases maintenance expenses for airports. The artificial grass does not need to be mowed, watered and who knew that many airports actually employ wildlife biologists ($$$) to keeps the critters under control. The FAA has conducted several experiments to test whether the artificial grass is a viable option and the turf passed with flying colors.

Today's artificial grass is not your typical sport's field turf. It has come a long way. The original Astroturf served its purpose in leading the way in introducing artificial grass to the general public. The stuff they are installing now is not the stuff in front of your Grandma's single-wide.....there is some high quality stuff out there that really looks and feels like real grass. The technology in polymers has grown exponentially to provide an artificial grass for every situation whether it is sports fields, commercial or residential landscape, golf courses, etc. With the environmental benefits of artificial grass and the rebates being offered by local municipalities the industry is really taking off.
I recently had to areas of my own yard installed with artificial grass. In the first area, it is really obvious because I had a beautiful putting green installed. But in the other area, you really can't tell. It looks like real grass.

Artificial Grass and Pets

A new trend is using patches of artificial grass as potty training pads for dogs. Some come with trays that go under the grass, while some simply can be laid on top of a disposable absorbent pad. Pets apparently love them and understand that this is a natural place for them to do their thing. They are especially useful for those living in apartments or condominiums. The artificial grass pad creates a mini yard for the dog. Another perk is that they do not have to be cleaned up daily. My friend who used the absorbent pad type says that he only needs to change the pad every 1-2 weeks!

hey there, I'm here to talk about artificial grass.

what makes one artificial grass better than another?
to infill or not to infill?
is the lead debate really over?
why are the pet people willing to pay so much more than the landscape people?
